Not sure what you need?

Where does it hurt?

Tap a point on the body and we will tell you what people come in with, how it is assessed and what treatment usually looks like.

Tap a point on the body

Back

What people come in with

The most common reason people come to us. Pain sitting, driving or standing, a back that flares every few weeks, and having stopped bending, lifting or going to the gym in case it makes things worse.

How we assess it

A full history, then movement, strength and control, plus the areas above and below. Back pain is frequently driven by the hips, the thorax or simply how much load your week is asking of it.

What treatment involves

Hands on treatment where it helps, plus the specific loading that rebuilds capacity. Josh works with the whole picture, including sleep, stress and activity, because those genuinely change how much your back tolerates.

Manual therapyProgressive loadingWhole person approach
Typical timeline

Most straightforward episodes improve noticeably within two to six weeks. Long standing pain takes longer and I will not pretend otherwise, but you should understand it from the first session.

Why BetterMe

What makes BetterMe different

Four things patients in Rainham and across Medway tell us they did not get elsewhere.

  • One physiotherapist from start to finish. You see Josh at every appointment, so you never have to start your story again.
  • An assessment that looks past the sore bit. Appointments run long enough to take a full history and examine the areas above and below, because pain that keeps returning usually has a cause somewhere else.
  • A private clinic, not a shared gym floor. Your own treatment room, dedicated parking outside, and appointments in the evening and at weekends.
  • No GP referral needed. Self referral is welcome and we are recognised by Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva and Vitality.

If physiotherapy is not the right answer for your problem, you will be told that at the first appointment.

“I came to Josh and BetterMe physio after a year of back pain that no one could explain or make go away, millions of sets of corrective exercises and stretches, 6 different physios and 1 really irritated back.”

“I came to him with chronic ongoing back pain. I have seen chiropractors and osteopaths previously who have done nothing to alleviate the pain. Before I saw Josh I couldn't even squat without extreme pain. In this short space of time this pain is now gone.”

Kirjkus Maximus · Google review
★★★★★

“I have always found previous physio appointments to be very black and white. The outcome has always been a referral and some exercises. It never took account of my mental health and my emotional wellbeing.”

Steph Smith · Google review

“Josh was very knowledgeable and made me feel at ease instantly. My journey to repair my shoulder began yesterday and within a couple of hours he has made such a difference. Less pain and more movement so soon wasn't expected.”

Jasbir Plaha · Google review

“Finally, a physiotherapist that doesn't just spend 5 minutes printing off complex exercises that no one understands. Josh actually listens and comes up with a unique approach that incorporates many different elements.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your first visit.

Do I need a referral to book?
No. You can book a private appointment directly with us. If you are claiming through medical insurance, check with your provider first, as some policies ask for a GP referral before they will authorise treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people I see need somewhere between three and six sessions, though it depends entirely on the problem and how long you have had it. You will leave the first assessment with a plan and realistic timelines, not an open ended course of appointments.
Where are you based, and is there parking?
The clinic is at 9 Eastwood Meadow in Rainham, Gillingham, ME8 8FA, with dedicated parking directly outside. It is a few minutes from Rainham station and straightforward to reach from anywhere in Medway.
What if I have tried physio before and it did not help?
That is one of the most common reasons people come to us. Usually it is because the assessment stopped at the painful area, or because treatment ended before the strengthening phase that makes the change stick. Josh will look at the whole picture and tell you honestly what he thinks is driving it.
How is this different to a physio chain?
You see the same MACP accredited physiotherapist at every appointment, in a private treatment room, for long enough to be assessed properly. Nothing is handed over to a different clinician halfway through your recovery.
